AICE Fast Facts

Graphic with the AICE Project logo

AICE Fast Facts - 3rd Most common cancer: Colon cancer is the 3rd most common cancer type in the world. In Europe, colon cancer is the 3rd most diagnosed cancer in men and the 2nd in women. Over 18 million Optical Colonoscopies (OCs) - Screening can save lives and there are over 18 million OCs conducted each year in Europe. This puts a strain on hospital resources with some countries experiencing long waiting lists. 99% diagnostic accuracy - Colon Capsule Endoscopy (CCE) is a less invasive alternative to OC for low-risk patients that takes place in the comfort of the patient's home. Recent meta-analysis highlights the high diagnostic accuracy of CCE supporting its inclusion into routine screening. Up to 75% CCE - We at AICE anticipate that between 50-75% of colon cancer screenings can benefit from CCE instead of OC (based on positive faecal immunochemical test (FIT) results). 35% the Future - Using CCE, the AICE patient pathway will incorporate artificial intelligence solutions that will increase quality and patient experience while reducing costs and, assuming current colon cancer diagnostic rates, 35% of all OCs could be replaced by CCE by 2030.
